"Who Ever Knew Arcade Action Shooter Could Be So Addictive"

Reviewed by: Jeremy | Latest updated: Jan 12, 2013

Hyperlight for Android is the best described as an awesome cool arcade space shooter in which players control a powerful spaceship soaring in the universe, what you need to do is going faster than light and destroying everything on your way.

The controls of Hyperlight are simple, hence it doesn't really matter whether you're a novice gamer without basic knowledge of rules about arcade space shooter genre. There're several alternative controls for choice, you can select touch only controls, tilt controls or the exotic tilt and touch, it all depends on you.

You control your spaceship in a virtualized cosmic environment where evil beings try to reach you, however, your ship posses a special power which will wipe out all enemies if it's successfully used. Hyperlight is easy to play but hard to master, there're so many ways to improve your skills. And most enjoyment of it comes from mastering the skills, once you get a full grip of the skills the game could be more fascinating.

Hyperlight for Android definitely ranks in my top three experiences with a arcade space shooter. Additionally, fun and accessible gameplay, endearing cartoon visuals as well as forty of well-designed levels and challenges all these highlights a fantastic atmosphere of the entire game. Once start, you'll be busy for months.

User Review of Hyperlight

  • Could be better. Sep 11, 2012

Ugly ironic retro looking interface, though I doubt it was designed with irony in mind. When using dual sticks (only viable option), the light speed bar is obscured by my thumb, so I'll run out of light juice and not know it until I run into an enemy and die. Should place the bar on the top of the screen instead. That's it for now.

  • Mislead by the reviews May 14, 2012

I was hoping for a lot more after seeing all these glowing reviews. The tilt controls seemed sloppy no matter how I calibrated. The tutorial has information obscured by the "back" and "next" buttons. The aspect ratio of the screen is standard instead of widescreen in the year 2012. It may seem like I'm being hard on this game, but I spent real money on this. I'm a huge twinstick fan and there's a ton of better examples of the genre out on the market for free. The price tag stings.

I've been looking for a geometry wars type game, and this may even be better. My thumbs are sore from playing this so much

Brings me way back to the old Atari tank game. Great fun. My reason for not giving it 5 star is that I find when shooting my hand covers some of the screen. Perhaps putting a fire control over the right hand side of the screen similar to the movement dial would be better.

I don't care how many "neon-dual-stick-hyper-shooters" there are, if they work, they're awesome. And Pew-Pew works. Controls are sharp, framerate is smooth, and the neon is bright. Plus, watching high score videos is addictive.
